SIGNING OF CONTRACT FOR: CONSULTANCY SERVICES FOR CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION OF NEW WAMI BRIDGE (513.5 M) AND ITS ASSOCIATED APPROACH ROADS (4.325 KM), TENDER NO. AE/001/2017-18/HQ/C/25.

The consortium of Advanced Engineering Solutions (TZ) and ILSHIN ENGINEERING & CONSULTANTS  have signed a contract with the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) on 26TH MARCH, 2019 for the execution of the project: consultancy services for construction supervision of new wami bridge (513.5 m) and its associated approach roads (4.325 km), tender no. ae/001/2017-18/hq/c/25.

The construction of Wami Bridge is part of the Government strategy to develop its road network to support the socio-economic development of Tanzania. The existing Wami Bridge which has the length of about 88.75 meters long has steep approaches and sharp curves that have been causing difficult driving conditions and in some cases caused fatal road accidents. The Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) through M/s Intercontinental Consultants and Technocrats Pvt. Ltd. in association with M/s Apex Engineering Co. Ltd. has prepared a design of the new bridge and its approaches at another location around the same area in order to arrest the current situation. The intended new bridge and its approaches have been designed with due considerations to good geometric standards avoiding the substandard curves and steep gradient for safety enhancement and comfortable driving. The total design length of the project road including structure is about 4.325 km connectingChalinze to Segera. Due to the substandard geometry of the existing bridge caused by the complicated landscape of the area, the location of the New Wami Bridge has been proposed to be on the downstream direction of the existing structure.

Iringa Rural, Mufindi and Kilolo Districts in Iringa Region form part of the Ihemi cluster defined by the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT). The area is recognized by its highest agricultural productivity potential where a variety of crops including maize, paddy/rice, pulses, sunflower, banana, tea, potatoes, wheat, cattle, pigs, poultry, horticulture and timber are grown.  However, the area lacks good road network connectivity especially during rainy seasons and is among the areas of the country with high poverty levels despite high economic potentials. Most roads in the area are unpaved with a combination of earth and gravel sections. Absence of proper drainage systems makes the roads suffer damages during rainy seasons and hampering the extraction of full agriculture potentials from the area and exacerbating transportation costs. Also, access to social (e.g. schools, health centers) and economic (e.g. markets, employment centers) services and facilities is very limited. The Development Objectives (PDO) of the RISE project is to Improve and sustain road connectivity in the selected agricultural potential areas and to build capacity in the sustainable management of rural roads. In order to boost access to market and improve connectivity to social economic services and facilities, it is pertinent to develop an all-weather road network in the area by upgrading all the unpaved roads to the appropriate sealing standard.  TARURA has selected the Wenda – Mgama road (19km) in Iringa DC and Mtili – Ifwagi (14km) road in Mufindi DC as pilot projects. Necessary studies will be conducted on this upgrade to the standard that will enable the roads to be passable throughout the year. The studies will also serve as Advanced Studies for Roads to Inclusion and Socioeconomic Opportunities (RISE) Programme which the World Bank intends to finance in the area.
